In a Silent World chronicles the emotional journey of Marshall and Terry Lawrence and their daughters, Carol and Rachel. Successfully enjoying “hearing” careers in music and communications, Marshall and Terry are thrust into an unknown culture when they discover 15-month-old Rachel is deaf.
The film provides an important conversation about differences in the hearing and d/Deaf cultures. It reveals misconceptions hearing individuals have about the d/Deaf community and surprising details largely unknown to hearing persons, shattering stereotypes while honoring a culture comprised of individuals who do not see themselves as disabled. It is also a story about faith, love and persistence.
The Lawrence family faced painfully difficult decisions. They encountered ignorance, intolerance and prejudice in their hearing world. Yet, they prevailed and helped Rachel succeed—ultimately finding blessings in the silence.
